Art Exhibition Statement
Rich Brimer “Pairings”
Now on view at the Springfield Opera House Gallery, Springfield, KY
Weekdays from 9 AM to 5 PM through Mid-June, 2025
In Pairings, I explore the dynamic relationship between immediacy and refinement, instinct and intention. This collection features six pairs of paintings—each set including a smaller oil painting created outdoors on-site, or en plein air along side a larger studio work developed from the same viewpoint.

“A View Through” El Matador State Beach, Malibu, CA. | 24×36″ $6000 oil on Linen. | 8×10 Private Collection
Painting on location allows me to respond directly to the light, atmosphere, and emotional tone of a place. I am able to sit with a location, searching the scene for inspiration. I find this process very meditative and it is an important component of creating a re–presentation of what I am seeing in front of me. Our eyes naturally perceive subtle shifts in light and shadow that a photograph cannot fully capture. Working from life enables me to reflect more truthfully what we experience in a landscape—depth, nuance, and a sense of presence that goes beyond photographic reference.

“The Turn-Around” Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, CA | 16×20 $2600 oil on Canvas | 8×10 $700 | Oil on wood Panel
By pairing these plein air studies with their studio counterparts, I invite viewers to consider not only the differences in scale and execution but also the evolving interpretation of a single scene. Pairings is a celebration of the painter’s eye and the transformative process of observation, memory, and creation.
